The present work proposes a strategy to teach differential calculus by developing some applications with the GeoGebra software as a didactical tool to clarify the concepts of variation and the derivative, as well as their relation with optimization problems. In this respect, we introduce two activities in which the graphical, numerical, and algebraic qualities of the software are exploited to analyze the aforementioned concepts. The last point endorses the latest research (Cuevas & Pluvinage, 2013; Hitt, 2003; Hohenwarter, Hohenwarter, Kreis & Lavicza, 2008; Little, 2011) on the proper use of semiotics representations of a mathematical concept which may help us to a better understanding of it.
