Abstract

Abstract: Associating the mathematical sign = with the equilibrium concept a wheighing scales as a puzzle has been designed and constructed in order to induce preschool children to the algebraic thinking inherent to the solution of first degree equations. The methodology is structured in different activities, which take place in three class sessions of 40 minutes each one for working during three days. The results obtained show that the children are able to abstract the concept of equality from the equilibrium concept. Additional results such as socialization, team work and tolerance have been also obtained.
